Allowing this campaign against Bangladesh to proceed unchallenged carries the seeds of seriously undermining the interests of our country even in the short term. The soonest the bluff and untruth of the campaigners are exposed and busted from effective and timely actions by our government, the best

Tarring the countrys image

From a dispassionate analysis of developments centred on Bangladesh over the last fortnight or so, anyone with his or her sensibility intact, may not be blamed for expressing that Bangladesh has been caught in a web of conspiracy the main aim of which is blackening the face of the country. The Prime Minister herself on return to Bangladesh on Saturday minced no words when she spoke in quite a forthright manner about such a conspiracy to tarnish the country’s image.
The solo murder of an Italian national in Dhaka was whipped up as if such an incident is unique in the global context that justifies declaring Bangladesh as dangerously unsafe for foreigners. The Australian cricket team postponed their scheduled visit to Bangladesh on apprehensions of  likely harms to their cricketers. Now, the second such murder of a Japanese national in Rangpur is touted as lending  further credence to the idea that Bangladesh has indeed become a very unsafe place all on a sudden.
However, as  Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina underscored in her press briefing on return , Bangladesh must not be made exceptional  in the sense of  providing security to foreigners. As it is, foreign nationals are dying outside their countries of origin in other countries all the time. If those countries where they are dying are not identified as insecure, why then a few cases of deaths of foreigners in Bangladesh in a long long time be turned into a matter of such great concerns and citizens of some  Western countries are being warned by their government about the risks of visiting Bangladesh ?
The US  based Gallup is world famous for its surveys on different issues. A Gallup survey some days ago found Bangladesh safer in the physical sense compared to even US, Australia and neighbouring India and Pakistan. Needless to say Gallup’s rating only reflected or confirmed the ground level realities obtaining in those countries including Bangladesh.
Allowing this campaign against Bangladesh to proceed unchallenged  carries the seeds of seriously undermining the interests of our country even in the short term. From foreign investments to visits by tourists, many sources of income and well-being for the country would be seriously affected. Therefore, the soonest the bluff and the untruth of the campaigners are exposed and busted from effective and timely actions by our government, the best.
It is very likely that the campaigners or their instigators want to destabilise the country to achieve their political ends that include a change in governance and creations of conditions here that would among other things lead to dissolution of the war crimes tribunals and setting free the convicted ones by these bodies. Our government will need to be extremely wary to successfully foil and detect these moves.
