The BNP activists allegedly vandalisd ruling Awami League’s campaign offices in Dhaka, Sherpur and Sylhet while a court in Kushtia sent the BNP contestant of Kushtia-1 (Daulatpur) constituency to jail in connection with two cases in the district yesterday.
In Dhaka, police yesterday arrested 10 people associated with Jamaat-e-Islami and BNP for allegedly vandalising an AL office in the Dhaka-15 constituency.
On Tuesday, miscreants had attacked AL candidate Kamal Majumder’s office at Mollapara, 60 feet area near Mirpur. The attackers vandalized the office, smashed the photographs of the Prime Minister and Bangabandhu and also fired shots on the premises. Sramik League leader of ward 15 Harun-ur Rashid was also injured in the attack and admitted to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital.
Mirpur police station officer-in-charge Dadon Fakir said Rashid was sitting at Majumder’s office when he was hit by a heavy object by three Jamaat-Shibir men riding a motorcycle.
Later, police arrested three of the attackers. Based on their information, the law enforcers detained some others.
Mamun Mostafa, assistant commissioner of police (Mirpur zone), confirmed the arrests and said a case was filed by Rashid. The arrestees were associated with Jamaat-e-Islami and BNP, he said. Jamaat-e-Islami secretary general Shafiqur Rahman has filed his nomination from Dhaka-15 to contest against AL’s Majumder in the forthcoming general election.
In another development, BNP candidates of Dhaka-4 and Dhaka-9 constituencies held press briefings yesterday to express fear over further attacks on their party campaigns and activists.
Dhaka-4 candidate Alhaj Salauddin Ahmed told journalists at his Shyampur residence that police were threatening his supporters.
Expressing fear for his life and family, he alleged that law enforcers were carrying on drives to arrest and harass opposition leaders and activists. Dhaka-19 candidate Dr Salauddin Babu alleged that police, with the help of ruling party activists, were carrying out mass arrests of BNP workers. He claimed the arrests of at least 19 top BNP activists in the locality and attacks against BNP’s campaign offices in the area.
Our Kushtia correspondent reports: a court yesterday sent Reza Ahmed Bachchu, the BNP candidate from the Kushtia-1 (Daulatpur) constituency, to jail in connection with two cases filed in January under the Explosives Act.
Kushtia district and sessions judge Arup Kumar Goswami passed the order when Reza appeared in court and sought bail, said public prosecutor Anup Kumar Nandi. Reza was out on an eight-month bail granted by the High Court that expired yesterday, Nandi said.
Our Sherpur correspondent adds: miscreants vandalised the election campaign office of the ruling party candidate from Sherpur-1 constituency at Bagbari Bazar in Sadar upazila early yesterday.
Md Nazrul Islam, OC of Sherpur police station, said the unidentified miscreants vandalised office furniture in Dhola union in the dark of night and later set fire to the office.
Our Sylhet correspondent reports: miscreants attacked an office of AL candidate from Sylhet-1 constituency Dr AK Momen.
Additional deputy Ccmmissioner (media) of SMP, Zedan Al-Musa, said: “A case was filed with Jalalabad police station on Tuesday night in this connection. Police have found the allegation to be true after visiting the spot.”
Sylhet Sadar upazila AL president Nijam Uddin said some BNP-Jamaat activists had vandalised their campaigning rickshaw.
On Monday, another complaint of an attack on an AL campaigning office in Amberkhana area was filed in Jalalabad police station.
