Heavyweights will lock-horns today at the Bangabandhu National Stadium when Abahani Limited and Bashundhara Kings will play the semifinal of the Independence Cup Football Tournament.
For the top favourites’ of the tournament Abahani and Bansundhara sealing the semifinal berths were not at all easy route as apart from the first match, both sides had to struggle to cross the group and the quarterfinal hurdles.
Bashundhara won their first match against Sheikh Jamal by 2-0 and Abahani made the campaign with 2-1 margin win against Muktijoddha.
In the very second match Abahani just survived with a goalless draw against Brothers Union while Bashundhara also escaped with a 0-0 draw against Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra.
But in the quarterfinal both sides saw huge challenges when Belfort salvaged Abahani with an 81st minute goal to bring the team into semifinal. On the other hands Bashundhara did huge struggle to make the semifinal berth when they narrowly escaped from an upsetting debacle after Rahmatganj MFS were about to win the quarterfinal.
However, Abahani will play the match with huge boost up when they came from a goal down to have an easy 3-1 victory over Bashundhara in the Federation Cup final, though Abahani manager Sattayjit Das Rupu does not want to forget it and looking forward to play a fresh game.
Rupu said about the today’s vital match that it would be very fighting encounter – “The Federation Cup was ended, so it is past, now it would be a new game, strong opponents.”
Rupu, who has been working as manager of Abahani, when talking about the Bashundhara’s World Cup star Daniel Colindres does not give any special attention to any player, said, “No particular department or specially any player we will focus on full match.”
Zubair Nipu, the strategic and technical director of Bashundhara recalling their 3-1 debacle in the Federation Cup final said, “Actually, we are not the team to concede such defeat but it was happened, Abahani area very strong side no doubt, this time hope fully we will play good game.”
“Today we will have to play without three regular players of first XI when Shushanta, Sabuj will not available for card problems and Ibrahim has ankle injury, main back Gotor might absent due to injury.”
“But I think, our side bench is also strong, who will replaces the regular players will have the opportunity to prove them. Overall, we will present a good football, entertaining match,” said Nipu.
