There is a sudden spurt in the demand for warm clothes due to the fall in temperature in the last couple of days.

Several retailers from different markets in the capital are now busy showcasing sweaters, cardigans, jackets, blazers and other types of winter clothes in front of shops, markets and bazaars for attracting customers. Blankets of different colours and designs are in high demand right now.

Ashraful Alam, owner of Ziad Fashion at Gulistan Trade Center, said: “We’re associated with the blanket business for more than 12 years. We import blankets from different countries like China, Korea and Vietnam. Locally made blankets are also available. They are in demand among the poorer sections.”

Prices of locally made blankets, each with a size of five to seven feet, range from Tk. 95 to Tk. 500. “Around 2,000 blankets are being sold each day.  The price of each imported blanket ranges from Tk. 1,650–7,000. Within a few days, the sales have increased to at least 50 per cent due to low temperature and cold weather,” said Ashraful.

“We sell 10-12 pieces of blankets at wholesale rates,” he noted.

“Middle income buyers are our major customers. They usually buy blankets  priced at Tk. 500-1,500,” he added.

Blankets will continue to be in high demand till January next year, he predicted.

Shaheen Ahmmed, owner of the fashion house Anjans, yesterday said: “We’ve made handloom, block-printed and embroidered shawls especially for women for this season.”

“Fancy shawls are available in different colours. Their prices range from Tk. 850 to Tk. 4,500. Kids can wear designed jackets and hoodies priced at Tk. 650-1,000,” he added.

An employee of Abdullah Fashion at Reza Super Market said: “We sell different types of sweaters and hoodies. They can be bought for Tk. 500 to Tk. 1,000.”

Selim, a street vendor, was selling winter clothes on a rickshaw van in front of Shampa Super market yesterday. “Selling winter clothes is my seasonal business. I’m doing well thanks to the persisting cold wave,” he said.

However, traders say that people shop for winter clothes only when they feel the bite of a cold wave.
