An attempt to murder case was filed yesterday against ruling Awami League lawmaker Manzurul Islam Liton for shooting and injuring nine-year-old boy Sourov Mia at Gopalcharan village in Sundarganj upazila of Gaibandha. Sourov’s father Saju Mia filed the case with the Sundarganj Police Station making Liton the lone accused, officer-in-charge Israil Hossain said. The entire family of the MP from Gaibandha-1 constituency has gone out of trace, he added.
Meanwhile, MP Liton, also the president of AL’s Sundarganj upazila unit, surrendered two licensed firearms -- a pistol, a rifle -- 3 rounds of the pistol’s bullets and 50 shotgun shells before the police station through a relative yesterday. It was mentioned that he had issued 50 rounds of bullets against his pistol and 100 rounds of shells against his shotgun. But the ruling party MP did not submit any reason why and how many of the bullets and shells were spent, said Gaibandha Additional Superintendent of Police Faruq Hossain.
Meanwhile, victim Sourav was being treated at Rangpur Medical College Hospital with bullet wounds in both the legs. Doctors said they performed surgery to remove two bullets from his legs.
According to Shahjahan Mia, an uncle of the victim, the incident took place around 6am on Friday when the boy, along with his father, was walking on the road near their house in BRAC crossing area.
“About 50 metres ahead of them, the lawmaker was trying to force a man to get into his vehicle that was parked on the side of the road. But as the man fled in fear, an enraged Liton opened fire and the bullets hit Sourav, who went down bleeding profusely,” he said. Liton was on his way to his residence in Bamondanga village from Sundarganj when the incident took place. Meanwhile, the BNP yesterday demanded the arrest of MP Manzurul Islam Liton for allegedly shooting and injuring a minor boy in Gaibandha on Friday.
The party alleged that the members of law enforcement agencies have turned out to be helpless in ensuring the rule of law in the country for lack of good governance. “An MP elected without votes wounded a child in Gaibandha’s Sundarganj upazila by firing shots on him like hunting a bird early Friday. Our party demands immediate arrest of MP Manzurul Islam Liton,” said BNP spokesman Asaduzzaman Ripon.
“Common people and even children are being regularly falling victims to terrorism unleashed by ruling party cadres and MPs elected without people’s votes,” said the BNP leader at a press briefing at party’s Nayapaltan central office.
