Kunio Hoshi, a Japanese, was shot dead in the Mahiganj area of Kawnia upazila yesterday (Saturday), and Cesare Tavella, an Italian, was gunned down in Gulshan on September 29. The police yesterday set up 30 security checkposts in different areas of the city and issued special instructions for residential hotels. Surprising checking is being carried out at key points. Foreigners have been advised not to panic and to inform the police before entering the city.
The CMP has started upgrading the list of foreigners staying in Chittagong to enhance their security, Devdas Bhattacharya, Additional Police Commi-ssioner of the CMP (crime & operation), said during an interview with The Independent yesterday.
The CMP enhanced its monitoring of residential hotels and spots frequented by foreigners, in particular OR Nizam Road, Khulsi, Halishahar, Agrabad and the CEPZ area. Foreigners stay in these areas as well.
According to figures with the CMP, around 2,500 foreigners are staying in the city for various purposes. They work in factories in the CEPZ and non-government organisations. Most of them are from Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, China and Nepal.
