Allegations of improper treatment have been brought against Asian Cardiac and General Hospital at Lalmatia in the capital by relatives of patients after three children died at the hospital on Friday night. According to the relatives of the children, the three died between 9:00pm and 11:30pm on Friday. Joya, a nurse at the clinic, claimed, however, that two children died as they were facing serious complications while the other baby died as the baby was born premature. They have all the facilities for proper treatment, she added. No doctors were seen at the hospital in the morning and only a nurse was present at the ICU where a child receiving treatment. The nurse said Dr Shishir Ronjon Das was giving treatment to the children. Dr Shisir is not a fulltime doctor at the clinic and visits the patients in the morning and evening. Some other doctors work full time, along with nurses, at the hospital, she said.
Meanwhile, panicked relatives shifted their patients from the hospital to other centres after getting news of deaths of children. Two employees of the clinic was also beaten by relatives of patients and handed over to the police.
Ehsanuddin, a relative of a child at the hospital, said they are preparing to shift the child as they heard many children died during the last four days at the hospital.
When contacted over the matter, DMP Deputy Police Commissioner (Tejgaon Division) Bilpob Kumar Sarker admitted the incident and said the ownership of the hospital was changed recently.
“We are investigating the whole matter,” he said.
Shamiul Islam, director of the Directorate General of Heath Services, said “We are also trying to know who were running the hospitals.”
A police team has been deployed at the hospital, said Kamruzzaman, sub-inspector of Mohammadpur Police Station.
