Stay cautious

In the wake of the killing of a Japanese national in Rangpur, Japan has asked its citizens living in or planning to visit Bangladesh to remain cautious, diplomatic sources said. A travel notice posted on the Facebook page of the Japanese Embassy in Dhaka yesterday afternoon also asked Japanese people to avoid places like hotels and conference halls where foreigners gather. However, the Foreign Ministry of Japan or the Japanese Embassy in Dhaka is yet to issue any statement with regard to the killing of its citizen. But, according to the diplomatic sources, the Japanese Embassy is monitoring the situation and in constant touch with the government on this.
Meanwhile, the European Union and United States called upon the government to bring the perpetrators of the killing of Japanese national Kunio Hoshi to justice after conducting a thorough investigation. Speaking at a programme organised by the Gandhi Ashram Trust at the CIRDAP auditorium in the capital yesterday, EU Ambassador to Bangladesh Pierre Mayaudon called for bringing the culprits to justice after prompt investigation.
US Ambassador to Bangladesh Marcia Bernicat asked the government to investigate all the aspects of the killing and to bring the perpetrators under the law as soon as possible. "I am deeply saddened by the murder of Japanese citizen Kunio Hoshi in Rangpur and offer my condolences to Mr. Hoshi's family, friends, and Japan,” she said in a statement. “I urge the Government of Bangladesh to investigate every aspect of this crime and to bring the perpetrators to justice as soon as possible,‎" she said. Meanwhile, the South Korean Embassy in Dhaka also issued a notice yesterday, asking the South Korean citizens to always maintain a high level of personal security awareness. “According to local media reports, a Japanese national was shot and killed by unknown miscreants in Kaunia, Rangpur city in the morning on Oct 3 (Saturday),” said the notice posted on the website of the South Korean Embassy in Dhaka. “Exercise caution and maintain a high level of personal security awareness at all times in all places,” it said.
