Participants in a press conference on Friday called for launching a national campaign to build awareness about importance of social harmony as a counter to violence. The press conference was held under the week-long nationwide awareness campaign styled as 'We should create a peaceful country by resisting violence' on the occasion of birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the campaigner of non-violence movement. The week-long programme included painting competition, lighting candles, debate contests, signature campaign, discussion meetings, cultural functions, distribution of campaign souvenirs etc. from October 2 to 8 for engaging communities with the message of non-violence supported by 16 organisations across the country, informed the organisers.
It was organized by the local committee of the Ahingso Andolon Procharavijan ( campaign of non-violence movement) in collaboration of Association of Voluntary Action for Society (AVAS) at Barisal Reporters Unity auditorium as per announcement of United Nations on 2007.
The organisers of the programme observed that only a handful of persons were involved in unleashing violence in the country and it was possible to end such activities if people were properly motivated.
Among others, NGO executives, including Rahima Sultana Kajal, Shuvangkar Chakroborty, Sirajul Islam, Nasrin Aktar, educationists Tapankar Charaborty, Prof Mohsin Ul Islam Habul, Prof Shibani Chowdhury, Nurul Alam Farid, former secretary of Barisal Press Club, Kamrul Hasan, secretary of BRU, and reporters of different print and electronic media addressed and attended the programme.
The campaigners opined, in reality, a vast majority of young people are eager to contribute their time and energy to positive activities.
