Rajshahi Water and Sewerage Authority (RWASA) will set up a water purification plant at a cost of Tk. 3,000 crore to ensure supply of pure drinking water for city dwellers. According to WASA sources, to supply fresh drinking water to the city people, a mega project involving billions of taka will be taken up. The project will be completed within next four years. The proposed plant will carry water through pipeline from the Padma River, purify it and then supply it to city houses. The main plant of the project will be set up at Farhadpur, 26.5 kilometre west from the city centre under Godagari upazila. Haripur of Paba upazila and Yousufpur of Charghat upazila have also been chosen as alternative spots of setting up the plants.
From this proposed water purification plant, fresh, drinking water will be supplied to all 30 wards of Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) and its surrounding areas as well as in 11 unions of Katakhali and Naohata Municipal areas. All old pipelines and hydrants of the city will also be repaired and renovated under the project.
It is learnt, during 90’s decade four water purification plants at a cost of Tk. 160 million were set up in the city which used to supply water from the River Padma after purifying it. But those plants turned inoperative within couples of years, mainly due to absence of water in the River Padma during the dry season and for settling silt and sand at the plant areas.
The proposed mega water purification plant will be set up in such a place of the where water was available round the clock and there was no change of river track.
After the setting up the plant, city dwellers of Rajshahi will get supply of iron and arsenic free water.
