Construction work to begin in Dec : Quader

Karnaphuli Tunnel

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader yesterday said that the construction work of the much-awaited Karnaphuli tunnel would begin at the end of the year. “The construction work of the tunnel under River Karnaphuli is likely to be completed by 2020. The approval for Development Project Proposal (DPP) is underway from Planning Ministry. The Prime Minister of Bangladesh and Chine President will lay foundation jointly of the project,” said Quader. The minister made the announcement while talking to the reporters following a meeting at the conference room of Naval Base Isa Khan Training Block. With Road Transport secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam in the chair, a discussion titled “Multilane Tunnel Construction under River Karnaphuli’ was held with the participation of all the stakeholders.
Obaidul Quader said that the tunnel was planned to be constructed for linking it with Asian Highway.
China Communication Construction Company Ltd will implement the project at a cost of Tk 8,000 crore. Of the total cost, China will provide Tk 5,500 crore while rest of the cost will be borne by Bangladesh government. The minister also said that the government attached top priority like Padma Bridge to construct the tunnel.
Referring to the construction work of Dhaka-Chittagong Highway, Obaidul Quader said that alternative measure would be undertaken if the construction work did not complete by the end of the year.  “We will brook any further delay. The contractors, project director and engineers all are responsible for missing the deadline. Stern action will be taken against the people responsible for the delay,” added the minister.  “We have extended the deadline of the project so many times. We will extend the deadline anymore,” added Quader.
