Over 2.79 lakh students get govt stipend

A total of 2,79,272 students of honours and equivalent levels were awarded stipends from the Prime Minister’s Education Assistance Trust.

Each student will get Tk 4,900 from the Prime Minister’s Education Assistance Trust, this was revealed at the inaugural function of stipend distribution in the conference room of the Education Ministry, an official release said.

Secretary of Secondary and Higher Education Division Md Sohrab Hossain inaugurated the stipend distribution programme at a function.

Sohrab said selected students for the stipend can withdraw the money through mobile banking of Dutch Bangla Bank in time for continuation of their studies smoothly.

Managing Director of Prime Minister’s Education Assistance Trust ABM Zakir Hossain said nearly 3 lakh students get stipend from the education assistance trust every year. The main objective of Prime Minister’s Education Assistance Trust is to provide stipend to the poor and meritorious students, he added. As many as 7,46,192 students were given stipend amounting Tk 411. 16 crore between 2014 and 2017. Secretary of Technical and Madrasah Education Division Md Alamgir and senior officials of the education ministry, among others, were present at the function.
