Grand Alliance’s final nominations from today

14-party starts polls campaign Dec 11
STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka
Grand Alliance’s final
nominations from today

The Awami League (AL) will start distributing final nomination letters from today to candidates of Grand Alliance who will take part in the upcoming general elections scheduled to be held on December 30. Apart from the 14 parties, Ershad led Jatiya party is a component of the Grand Alliance led by the Awami League.  AL general secretary Obaidul Quader made the announcement yesterday (Thursday) at a joint meeting of the Awami Swechhasebak League, held at the AL’s central office in the city. “Finalising the nominations of our party and alliance was the major challenge for the AL. We have already completed our nomination process along with alliance partners under the leadership of party chief Sheikh Hasina. We will issue the final letters to the candidates of the AL-led Grand Alliance in a day or two,” he said.

“The Awami League has been in power for a long time and it has many candidates. Hence, it was very difficult to scrutinise the party’s candidates,” he added.

“We have also completed seat sharing with our partners peacefully. We could reach a consensus over the seat-sharing issue with our partners. Our ties with our alliance partners were not hampered over the issue of seat sharing,” he observed.

“We conducted the survey as regards not just our party aspirants, but also on the candidates of the BNP and other parties. Hence, we know the present situations of the other parties. The parliamentary board has nominated the AL candidates after considering all aspects,” he added.

The AL earlier distributed 281 party nomination letters among the selected party leaders. Of them, 231 were AL leaders and 50 were from the AL-led Grand Alliance.

Quader added that earlier, they would give 65 to 70 seats to the partners from among the 300 seats of the party.

However, the AL is now facing a crisis of rebel party candidates in more than 80 seats across the country.

Party president Sheikh Hasina has formed committees to talk to the party’s rebel candidates so that they withdraw their nomination papers by December 9, the last date of withdrawal of nomination papers. Meanwhile, the AL-led 14-Party Alliance candidates will start campaigning on December 11 for the upcoming 11th parliamentary elections, slated for December 30.

“The AL-led 14-Party Alliance candidates will start their campaign from Sirajganj district on December 11 for the upcoming general elections, slated for December 30,” Samyabadi Dal general secretary Dilip Barua told journalists yesterday (Thursday).

The decision was taken at a meeting of the central committee of the alliance at the AL central office on Bangabandhu Avenue on Wednesday.

The alliance will also conduct an electoral campaign in Motijheel, Lalbagh and Mirpur areas of the capital on December 13, 14 and 15 respectively.

The 14-Party Alliance will also carry out electioneering in Feni on December 19, Kushtia on December 21, Rajshahi on December 22, Naogaon on December 23 and Gaibandha on December 24.
