‘Digital Bangladesh Day’ on Dec 12

Experts at a function yesterday observed that digital literacy among young people is a must to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and make Bangladesh a progressive state. They came up the observation at the event titled ‘Digital Khichuri Challenge’ in the city. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in partnership with the ICT Division and Facebook organised the event to collect ideas from youths with a view to building a more peaceful and tolerant society and promoting cultural diversity in the country. Speaking at the closing ceremony of the seminar, Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) mayor Abu Jahed Mohammed Nasir Uddin stressed the need for digital literacy among the young people to prevent cybercrime and propaganda.

“In terms of numbers, Bangladesh is a young nation. A hundred million of its current population are aged 30 or below. But, the youth population is heterogeneous. Platform like Digital Khichuri can bring this heterogeneous group together and find a common solution to promote the cultural diversity in Bangladesh,” he said.

The CCC mayor said Facebook can be a strong tool to be self-employed, but at the same time if Facebook is used inappropriately, it can be a dangerous tool for the youths. After four successful Digital Khichuri Challenges in four divisions, Chattrogram version of Digital Khichuri Challenge was organised to find new solutions from the youths of this division that can promote the strength of Bangladesh’s diversity and promote peace and tolerance.

UNDP Deputy Country Director Kyoko Yokosuka said platform like Digital Khichuri will help Bangladesh achieve SDGs 16 – Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.

Mahmuda Afroz, Robert Stoelman and Shidartho Goushami from UNDP and Tina Jabeen from the ICT Innovation also spoke at the event.
