A woman tea stall owner was beaten up and assaulted allegedly by a Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activist of Jahangirnagar University (JU) yesterday as she asked to pay due of her shop. The incident took place at noon in front of Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall (MMH) of the university.
The accused Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activist has been identified as Syed Layeb Ali, a master’s student of Philosophy department and resident of MMH Hall and loyal to JU BCL General Secretary SM Abu Sufian Chanchal.
Tea stall owner, Ayesha Khatun Rubi, 35, alleged that Layeb ‘hurled abuse’ on her and ‘beaten’ up with a bamboo stick when she asked him to pay due.
“Sometimes, he would purchase cigarettes and drink tea and assured me to pay it later. But, he hardly pays it. We are very poor. Allah won’t forgive him. Allah will do justice,” she said.
However, BCL activist Layeb Ali denied the allegation and said, “The woman asked me to pay my due. But I hardly transaction with her. I asked to show my tally note book, but she failed. She locked altercation with me.”
When contacted, SM Abu Sufian Chanchal said, “An alteration was took place between them. During locking her stall’s door, she got hurt. No BCL activist beat up her.” “Steps would be taken after look into the matter,” he added.
Contacted, Provost of Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall Prof Shafi Md. Tareq said, ‘It’s an unexpected incident. I have informed the matter. I have already given direction to look into the matter. I will take step very soon in this regard’.
