Ershad released from hospital, ‘set to start working for polls soon’

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

Jatiya Party (JP) chairman H.M. Ershad has been discharged from the hospital and will soon start working for the December 30 election. JP secretary general ABM Ruhul Amin Hawlader said this while talking to reporters after a meeting with the chief election commissioner (CEC), KM Nurul Huda, at the Agargaon Nirbachan Bhaban yesterday. The JP is a part of the Awami League (AL)-led Grand Alliance. Ershad, a political maverick in Bangladesh politics, is known for his idiosyncrasies. Many political elements have expressed skepticism about his reported sickness and called the whole episode a ‘drama’.

“We’ve submitted our party chairman’s nomination. We'll campaign for his election. Sir (Ershad) is now back home and will take part in the national election under the AL-led Grand Alliance,” said ABM Hawlader. Ershad will start formal election activities within a few days, he added.

Regarding allegations of ‘nomination trading’, Hawlader said: “Some candidates are really frustrated over not receiving party nomination. They are spreading such rumours. They are trying to destroy the congenial atmosphere inside the party. People have faith in us.”

“Whatever is being published in newspapers regarding nomination trading is totally false, baseless and fabricated,” he claimed. The JP has already set up offices in view of the upcoming election across the country, he said, adding that the party is gearing up for the polls.

On November 27, Ershad, who is also special envoy to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, was admitted to Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in the city. AT that time, party leaders speculated that he might leave for Singapore for treatment on December 2. Although the Awami League (AL) said that they would leave 47 seats for the JP in the national polls, the JP is still uncertain about it, said sources.

Meanwhile, JP candidates have submitted nominations for 233 seats out of the 300 seats in Parliament.
