Three writers receive BRAC Bank-Samakal literary award

Syed Manzoorul Islam, Jatin Sarker and Pias Majid won the literary award ‘BRAC Bank-Samakal Shahitya Puroshkar 2017’.

Syed Manzoorul Islam won the award for his book ‘Ekattor O Onnanya Golpo’ in the poetry and novel category, Jatin Sarker for his book ‘Muktobuddhir Chorai-Utrai’ in the essay, autobiography, travel story and translation category, and Pias Majid for his book ‘Monishar Mukhorekha’ in the ‘Humayun Ahmed Young Writer’ category, said a press release yesterday.

BRAC Bank and the Daily Samakal launched the literary award in 2011 to inspire the writers and litterateurs to further enriching Bangla literature with their creative works. Later, the ‘Young Writer’s Award’ was dedicated in memory of late legendary novelist Humayun Ahmed, the release added.

The award was announced at a programme at Bangabandhu International Conference Center in the city on Friday. National Professor Dr Anisuzzaman was present at the programme as the chief guest.

Daily Samakal Publisher AK Azad, Daily Samakal Acting Editor Mustafiz Shafi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of BRAC Bank Limited Selim RF Hussain and literary personalities attended the program, among others.

According to the release, the award winners in the essay, autobiography, travel story and translation and poetry and novel categories received Taka 200,000 as the prize money while the award winner of ‘Humayun Ahmed Young Writer’ received Taka 100,000. The winners also received crests and citations. The three winning books were selected from the books published in the year 2017.

Since its inception, the literary award has generated huge enthusiasm in literary community of Bangladesh, the release said, adding that a total of 467 books were submitted this year in the three categories. A panel of jury comprising Ahmed Rafiq, Hasan Azizul Haque, Helal Hafiz and Anwara Syed Haq selected the winning books.
