Tale of Bangladesh’s 500 plus total
West Indies became the fourth team to concede 500 plus total to Bangladesh, after the hosts compiled 508 before being all out in the first innings of the second Test. New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe are the three teams to concede 500 plus runs on two occasions to Bangladesh earlier. It was overall Bangladesh’s ninth 500 plus total, with Pakistan are the other team against whom they made 500 plus score. Bangladesh’s highest against West Indies was 556 which they scored in 2012. That match ended in draw. Overall 508 was Bangladesh’s seventh highest total. Bangladesh’s highest total was 638 against Sri Lanka in Galle in 2013, a match in which Mushfiqur Rahim became the first Bangladeshi batsmen to score double century.
11 double figures for the first time
Regardless of the win or defeat, Bangladesh’s first innings of the second Test against West Indies will be remembered for a reason—this is the innings in which all 11 Bangladeshi players reached double digit figure for the first time with lowest 12 came from No.11 batsman Nayeem Hasan’s willow. Mahmudullah (136) made a century in this innings while three other batsmen—Shakib Al Hasan (80), Shadman Islam (76) and Liton Das (54) reached half-century. This is however only the 14th occasion in Test cricket’s 141-year history that all of the 11 batsmen reached double digit figure.
Debate put to rest!
It took him 71 innings and eight years 10 months to break his previous best score but Mahmudullah would be satisfied with the fact that, finally he could reduce the gap of making centuries. His career best 136 in the second Test against West Indies was his third and came after just two innings. After scoring 115 in his only 10th innings of the career in 2010, Mahmudullah took 69 innings to get to his second one when he scored 101 not out against Zimbabwe. His century draught despite being a senior batsman of the side raised a question whether he is a Test material.
Century at No.7 position
In his career best 136, Mahmudullah has earned a feat also. Coming to bat at No.7 position, he reached his third Test century after some tensed moment as he played a number of dot balls, before he cut off-spinner Roston Chase past point for four to reach the three-figure mark. This was Bangladesh's first century from No. 7 to 11 since 2013. Only two batsmen - Mushfiqur Rahim and Nasir Hossain - have previously scored 100s at No 7.

The debate whether he is good enough to play Test cricket now could be put to rest after Mahmudullah Riyad’s struck his career best 136, digging deep to steer Bangladesh through some crucial sessions…
