Will Bangladesh enforce follow-on in Dhaka Test?

Sports Reporter, Dhaka

Bangladesh never forced any team to follow-on despite getting the chance on two occasions—both against Zimbabwe. With West Indies still needing 234 runs to avoid follow-on after being slumped to 75 for five in reply of Bangladesh’s 508 in the first innings, there was realistic chance to give them a shot to earn their first ever victory with innings margin.

But Bangladesh batsman Mahmudullah whose career best 136 was catalyst in the side’s big total looked puzzled about forcing follow-on.

“These are two different wickets. The Chittagong wicket had more help for spinners. This is a better wicket for the batsmen, so I would give credit to the bowlers for taking the five wickets, all bowled. Hopefully we will get some more assistance from the pitch, now that there appears to be some more cracks.”

The cracks could create more danger for a side who will be batting in the fourth innings and if by any chance West Indies could take some runs lead, it would leave Bangladesh in uncomfortable state. “We are still far away from the follow-on. We have to bowl well first, and then decide if we are going to apply the follow-on,” he said.

But Mahmudullah said there is no shortage of motivation to give West Indies back what Bangladesh received during their tour in Caribbean Island in last July.
