Rajshahi Juba League man stabbed dead by rivals

A local Juba League leader was stabbed to death and five others were injured allegedly by rival groups at Taherpur municipality under Bagmara upazila in Rajshahi on Saturday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Chanchal Chandra, 42, Vice President of Juba League, Taherpur unit and son of Naren Chandra of Haldarpara village in Taherpur, Bagmara.

According to witness, two rivals groups of Awami League, based on lawmaker Engineer Enamul Haque and Mayor of Taherpur municipality Abul Kalam Azad locked into a clash yesterday in Horitolla area of Taherpur. Kalam’s supporter Chanchal was stabbed allegedly by Enamul’s supporters and five others were injured during the clash.

Locals rescued Chanchal and sent him to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where attending doctors declared Chanchal dead.

Mayor Abul Kalam Azad along with some his followers were talking on Jamgram High School ground. Kalam however, also the resident of the school’s Managing Committee. At that time, assistant teacher of the School Gulbor Ali, he is known as lawmaker Enamul’s follower captured some video clip over his mobile phone. After seeing the matter supporters of Mayor Kalam beat him up.

 After hearing the news of injury, Gulbor Ali, supporters of lawmaker Enamul Haque, led by Babu alias Art Babu rushed to the Taherpur Bazaar and allegedly stabbed Chanchal Chandra. However; supporters of Mayor Kalam also rushed to the spot and chased them.    

Nasim Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Bagmara Police Station, said after hearing the news of clash additional forces rushed to the spot. Three of them were arrested in this connection. At least five were injured in this incident, he added.

It is learnt, a conflict has been prevailing between lawmaker Engineer Enamul Haque of Rajshahi-4 constituency and Mayor of Taherpur municipality Abul Kalam Azad over nomination. The both have collected nomination papers from Awami League. However, the nomination board gave nomination to Enamul Haque officially for the third time.
