About 100 lawyers have collected nomination forms to contest the December 30 general election with tickets mainly from the two major political parties of the country -- Awami League (AL) and the BNP (Bangladesh Nationalist Party). Some of them are incumbent parliament members, while others collected the forms to fight the polls for the first time.
This correspondent independently gathered the information about the collection of nomination forms by about 100 lawmakers AL advisory member advocate Abdul Baset Majumder collected the nomination form for the Dhaka-17 constituency. Talking to this correspondent, Majumder, who is also a former chairman of the Bangladesh Bar Council, said he has been working in the legal arena for about 50 years for the welfare of the people.
“I have worked for the welfare of the people as well as the lawyers during my long legal profession. I stood by the side of litigants when they came to me. I have also taken part in social development work. I have established a hospital and orphanage. If I get nomination, I will work as a servant of the people,” he observed.
Supreme Court (SC) lawyer advocate Shah Monjurul Hoque wants to contest with the AL's ticket from the Mymensing-8 constituency. He has collected the nomination form.
The senior lawyer said he has been working for the welfare of the people when he started his career as a lawyer.
“I worked for litigants when they came to me. But I took special care of the people of my native village. I have participated in social development work there. If I get the nomination from the party, I will work for the welfare of the people after wining from the Mymensing-8 constituency,” he added.
Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) president and BNP vice-chairman, Advocate Zainul Abedin, collected the nomination form for Barishal-3 constituency. He wants to contest as a BNP candidate.
The SCBA president said he has been staying with his constituency’s people for about 40 years. “The people of my native village are expecting more from me. If I get the nomination and get elected, I will give all my effort for betterment of the people,” he noted.
AL legal affairs secretary advocate SM Rezaul Karim collected the nomination form for the Pirozpur-1 constituency. “The main work of Parliament is formulation of law. Those who are skilled in law and capable of formulating laws should get nomination. They should be elected to formulate proper and time-befitting laws for the welfare of the people,” he added.
Other lawyers who want to contest the election on the AL ticket include law minister Anisul Huq (Brahmonbaria-4), attorney general Mahbubey Alam (Munshiganj-2), food minister Advocate Kamrul Islam (Dhaka-2), advocate Dr Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury (Rangpur-6), deputy speaker Advocate Md Fazle Rabbi Mia (Gaibandha-5), former law minister Advocate Abdul Matin Khasru (Cumilla-5), Bangladesh Bar Council vice-chairman Advocate Yusuf Hossain Humayun (Vola-2), advocate Shahara Khatun (Dhaka-8), advocate Shamsul Haque Tuku (Pabna-1), advocate Molla Mohammad Abu Kawser (Dhaka-8), barrister Fazle Noor Taposh (Dhaka-10), advocate Nurul Islam Sujan (Panchagarh-2), advocate Nazibullah Hiru (Dhaka-7), advocate Mahbub Ali (Habiganj-4), advocate Mosarraf Hossain Kajol (Dhaka-16), advocate Momtaz Uddin Ahmed Mehedi (Dhaka-18), barrister Tanzib-ul-Alam (Chattagram-2), barrister Reza-e-Rakib (Tangail-6) and advocate Badiul Alam Budu (Pabna-2).
Among those who want to get the BNP ticket include barrister Moudud Ahmed (Noakhali-5), barrister Aminul Haque (Rajshahi-1), barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah (Dhaka-16), advocate Khandaker Mahbub Hossain (Barguna-2), Advocate Nitay Roy Chowdhury (Magura-2), advocate Mir Mohammad Nasir Uddin (Chattagram), advocate Taimur Alam Khandaker (Narayanganj-1), barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokan (Noakhali-1), advocate Sanaullah Mia (Narshingdi-3), advocate Moazzem Hossain Alal (Barishal), advocate Mahsin Miah (Munshiganj), advocate Golam Mostafa Khan (Narshingdi-3), advocate Iqbal Hossain (Narshingdi-3), advocate Badruddoza Badol (Jamalpur-3), advocate Khurshed Alam Miah (Netrakona-2), advocate Gazi Kamrul Islam Sajol (Barishal-1), barrister Kaysar Kamal (Netrakona-1), barrister Raghib Rauf Chowdhury (Kustia-2), barrister Nowshad Jamir (Panchgarh-1) and advocate Sagir Hossain Leon (Barguna-2).
