Jatiya Party (JP) Chairman HM Ershad said yesterday that only the most competent persons will get party nomination for the upcoming parliamentary polls and all party leaders and activists have to accept the chairman's choice. “Only the most competent persons will be given party ticket to contest the upcoming general election and once I nominate any candidate you have to work for them to ensure victory,” he said while addressing JP nomination-seekers during their interview at a convention centre in Gulshan area of the capital.
The JP has attached a condition that everybody willing to contest the next polls on the JP ticket has to accept the party chairman's decision, a senior leader of the party said. Addressing the nomination seekers, Ershad said that his party, now a partner in the AL-led grand alliance, may join another alliance, if needed, due to political reasons.
Without elaborating on the matter of joining another alliance, Ershad, who is also a special envoy to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, said: “Primarily, we’ll nominate 300 candidates against 300 constituencies. Many of them will have to step back from their candidacy if the JP remains in the AL-led alliance or joins any other alliance.”
The JP chief said he had spent seven years in jail for the sake of his party. “I fell sick inside the jail, but then prime minister, Khaleda Zia, didn’t arrange any treatment for me. She said I should be allowed to die. But I’m still alive, even though there are cases against me,” he added.
He directed the leaders and activists to return their respective areas and work for the nominated persons. “I will take the decision at a proper time and just have faith in me,” Ershad said.
He said a record number (2,865) of nomination forms have been sold this year. After scrutiny, 780 aspirants were interviewed against 300 constituencies, he added.
“I am so happy that there are so many of candidates of JP to contest the national polls. But I find it very difficult to select only 300 candidates from so many aspirants. As it isn’t possible to give everyone party nomination, I ask all to work for the party-nominated candidates,” Ershad said.
The party co-chairman, Raushan Ershad, said: “Today’s youth presence proves that the JP has become stronger. The country underwent maximum development when this party was in power.”
Party’s Secretary General Ruhul Amin Hawlader said everybody will accept the party chairman’s decision regarding nominations for the 11th parliamentary polls. Hawlader also assured the party chairman that party leaders and activists have full confidence in him and they would not leave him under any circumstances.
Party co-chairman GM Kader and other presidium members were also present with the party chairman as part of the interview board.
