Lawmakers Abdur Rahman Badi and Amanur Rahman Khan Rana will not be getting Awami League (AL) tickets for contesting the general elections slated for December 30, AL general secretary Obaidul Quader said yesterday. Talking to reporters at his Secretariat office, Quader said the party’s two lawmakers (Badi and Rana) are very popular in their respective areas. But this time they will not get party tickets for contesting the next polls for their alleged involvement in some controversial acts.
Shahina Akhter Chowdhury, wife of Abdur Rahman Badi from Cox's Bazar-4, and Ataur Rahman Khan, father of Amanur Rahman Rana, from Tangail-3, may get party tickets, the AL general secretary said.
Replying to a question over giving nomination to family members of Badi and Rana, Quader said: “Are all members in his (Badi) family bad? As there is a controversy surrounding Badi, we have selected his wife for the constituency.”
Badi became a Parliament member on the AL ticket in 2008. Later, Badi grabbed headlines when he was named as a drug peddler on the government’s anti-narcotics list, though it did not prevent him from getting an AL ticket for the second time in 2014.
The AL leader of Tangail, Amanur Rahman Khan Rana, on the other hand, is accused in the murder of freedom
fighter Farook Ahmed. Rana, a member of the Khan family having influence over the politics of Tangail, contested the by-polls in 2012 from Ghatail as an independent candidate when he failed to get the AL nomination. The AL expelled him from the party, only to welcome him back when he won the election. He was elected MP uncontested again in 2014.
Besides, the AL general secretary also made it clear that the Bangladesh National Cricket Team ODI captain, Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, would contest the polls from the Narail-2 constituency.
When his attention was drawn to the news about some ministers and MPs not getting nomination, Quader said many heavyweight candidates of his party may not get nomination this time. They can be dropped from the final nomination list for different reasons, he added.
