Youngster Shadman Islam who was added to Bangladesh’s squad for the first Test as an additional opener, was happy to get some tips from coach Steve Rhodes.
The English-born coach saw Shadman playing the practice game against West Indies for BCB XI and instantly sorted out some technical problems.
The 23-year old opener is now trying to fix it.
“He said that I played well and could have made the innings longer. He also said that I have to work with my defence and with some technical issues,” Sadman said on Tuesday in Chattgogram.
“He had seen me blocking the deliveries in yesterday’s match and gave me some tips. If I can follow what he said about the technical aspect of my defence, I will be a better batsman and can stay in the crease more time as well as I can play spin well.”
Shadman said it is hard work that helped him make the cut in the national team even though he was under scanner for sometimes now.
“I must work hard. If I don’t do, it will make an adverse impact on my performance. Since I have been working hard, I can reach this stage. So I think hard work is imperative. It is imperative to thrive here. In fact hard work has helped me to make the cut in the national team,” he said.
“I played well in front of coach and selectors as they were presented in the practice match. I thought that if I play well, I might get a chance. I have played the practice match keeping this thought in mind.”
Even though he has no clue whether he would make a direct entry to the first XI, Shadman said he had already prepared an action plan to face the West Indies fast bowler.
“I have not thought anything yet (about West Indies pacers). Here are many pacers in Bangladesh who can bowl at a great pace. I think it will be tough if I think about the names of the bowlers. I just think to face the balls, nothing more.”
Shadman however revealed Tamim Iqbal’s name as his idol and ironically he was added to the squad as a replacement of the swashbuckling opener, who was ruled out from the first Test following his side strain.
“Tamim Iqbal is my idol since childhood,” said Sadman when he was queried.
Like Tamim Iqbal, Sadman is also a left-hand batsman who has been a regular run-scorer in the domestic circuit over the last few years and had previously represented Bangladesh A and Bangladesh Under-19 teams.
He amassed 648 runs at 64.8 for Dhaka Metro and finished as the highest run-getter in the recently-concluded National Cricket League season. He belted two centuries and three half-centuries in the tournament, with his individual highest score being 189 runs.
Shadman was also among the top-three run-scorers in Bangladesh Cricket League (BCL) last season, scoring 500 runs in six matches at an average of 62.50.
The 23-year-old was part of the BCB XI that faced West Indies in a two-day practice match ahead of the first Test. He shared a 123-run opening stand with Soumya Sarkar and was run out for 73 runs in the match.
“I always have a dream to play for the national team. I have been playing first-class cricket and Dhaka premier league since the last World Cup. My goal was to perform wherever I get a chance. I knew that if I keep performing, I will get a chance,” he said.
The first Test starts in Chattogram on 22 November. Shakib Al Hasan will return to action in the match and will captain the 14-member squad.
