AL, BNP leaders ready to contest polls from jail

Three leaders of the BNP and one leader of the Awami League (AL) are preparing to contest the upcoming polls from jail. The leaders are identified as BNP central body vice-president Abdul Salam Pintu, BNP central committee child affairs secretary Abul Kalam Azad Siddiki, Jubo Dal secretary Sultan Salah Uddin Tuku and AL leader Alhaj Amanur Rahman Khan Rana.

It is learnt that BNP leader Abdus Salam Pintu was elected MP from Tangail -2  in 1991 and 2001. He was appointed deputy minister in 2001. He is now in jail and awarded the death penalty in the 21 August grenade attack case of 2004.

His younger brother, Shamsul Alam Tofa, who is president of the BNP Tangail district unit, collected the nomination form for him.

Pintu will submit the nomination paper from jail, sources said.

If Pintu fails to contest the polls on a legal point, Tofa will contest from the seat, the sources added.

Abul Kalam Azad Siddiki, who is also president of the Mirzapur upazila BNP, was elected MP from Tangail 7 in 1996. He was arrested on November 6 from Dhaka in an arson case in Paltan police station. He is in jail now. His nomination paper was collected by his wife.

He will contest from jail as his nomination, sources said.

Sultan Salah Uddin Tuku, another brother of Abdus Salam Pintu, was arrested in an arson case. He is in jail now.

He will contest from the Tangail -5 (Tangail Sadar) constituency from jail, sources told the correspondent.

Alhaj Amanur Rahman Khan Rana, religious affairs secretary of the Tangail district AL, contested the by-election in 2012 from Tangail -3 (Ghatail) as an independent candidate. He defeated AL candidate Shahidul Islam Lebu. He was nominated in the 2014 election as an AL candidate and elected MP unopposed. But he was arrested in the AL leader FF Farook Ahmed murder case.

He has been in jail for the last two years. Sahahidul Islam Hesting, collected the nomination paper from the AL on his behalf.

If Rana is not chosen by the AL as a candidate, he is likely to contest the polls as an independent candidate, sources said.
