Cops crack case of woman’s murder on running bus

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has found out the reason for the much-talked-about murder of Jarina, who was killed last week in a running public bus. The Dhaka unit of the PBI found out that it was Jarina’s son-in-law—29-year-old Md Nur Islam, the plaintiff in the case—who had plotted the murder. He was aided by his mother Mosammat Amena Begum, 48, and Mohammad Shawpan, 35, his maternal uncle.

Md Nur Islam paid Tk. 10,000 to four transport workers to kill Jarina following a family feud, deputy inspector-general (DIG) Banaj Kumar Majumder, the chief of the PBI, said yesterday during a press briefing at PBI headquarters.

Jarina was killed in a moving bus after her father was pushed off the vehicle on the Dhaka–Tangail highway in Savar on the outskirts of the capital on November 10. She was returning from the Ashulia area after visiting her daughter Rozina, who had recently become a mother.

Soon after the murder, Jarina’s son-in-law Noor Islam filed the murder case with Ashulia police station. But the PBI’s investigation found that Noor himself was involved in the murder, said the PBI chief.

It was known from the initial investigation that there was a family feud between Rozina and her in-laws from the beginning of their marriage, for which Noor Islam and his family had always blamed Rozina’s mother Jarina. This conflict had serious consequences last week.

At one stage of their dispute, the victim's daughter, Rozina, was beaten by her husband, Nur Islam. The relationship between the two families deteriorated when the news spread. Rozina’s mother Jarina came to Dhaka to settle the matter. Rozina's husband and her mother-in-law blamed Rozina's mother Jarina for the dispute and conspired to kill her.
