That plastic industry has immense potentials in Bangladesh is a highly delightful piece of information. Like the RMG sector, plastic sector is also growing phenomenally in the country. According to a report of this newspaper yesterday, China has moved towards high-tech industries and this has created a massive opportunity for Bangladeshi plastic products exporters to increase the global market share. Export of plastic products has risen significantly in the 2018–19 financial year (July-October), compared to 2017–18 (July-October).
Around 12 lakh people are now directly and indirectly employed in about 5,000 small, medium and large plastic goods manufacturing units in the country. The annual sale of plastic products amounting to around Tk 17,000 crore speaks volumes of the great demand for the products. There was a time when people, particularly housewives, were dependent on earthen pots, utensils and other household articles made of aluminum, brass, steel, canes and bamboos.
Gone are those days; now they have turned mostly to plastic products. In fact, plastic products have replaced many traditional household articles made of other materials. Apart from household articles, kitchen items and furniture, there is a burgeoning market for plastic products like PVC pipes, shopping bags, injection moulding products, woven bags, PET/PE bottles, laminated packages, rigid sheets, garment accessories, cosmetics and medicine packs.
The finished plastic products with eye-catching colours, smart designs, durability and competitive prices have managed to earn the confidence of people from all walks of life in the country. What is gratifying is that even foreigners are taking keen interest in Bangladeshi plastic products. This augurs well for the foreign markets of the country’s products. Once the demand for Bangladeshi plastic products is created abroad, it will contribute greatly to the country’s economy greatly. Many plastic products manufacturing industries have emerged in the country in recent times. The sole objectives of the entrepreneurs are to promote the sector and meeting the local demands. If a comprehensive plan is taken, the export potentials of the products can be increased substantially. What is needed now is due patronage by the state. Bank loans on easy terms and conditions and all logistic supports can help further flourish of the industry. However, the issue of recycling of the plastic products should be addressed properly in the interest of sound environment.
