A truck driver and its helper were electrocuted as a truck came into contact with a live transmission line in Jhajor area of the city early yesterday. The victims were identified as Rubel Mia, 30, driver of the truck and helper Jahangir Alam, 50, both of them hailed from Bhola.
Deputy Assistant Director of Gazipur fire service station Akteruzzaman said, a dump truck was unloading soil at the area for the ongoing construction works of Dhaka-bypass highway at around 1.30 am yesterday.
When the driver upheld the rear side of the truck to release the soil from the truck, it came into contact with a 33-kv transmission line and the truck was electrified immediately, leaving the truck driver dead on the spot and his assistant died on the way to hospital.
The truck caught fire after the incident. On information, a fire fighting unit from Joydebpur fire station rushed to the spot and took fire under control. The fire service personnel also recovered the body and sent to Shahid Taz Uddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital morgue.
