The recent chaos in front of BNP’s central office in Naya Paltan indicates that the party may not join the upcoming general election, Jatiya Party (JaPa) chairman HM Ershad has apprehended. “It’ll be good if the BNP participate in the poll. JaPa will contest in 300 constituencies across the country if the BNP finally boycotts the election,” the JaPa chief came up with the remarks while talking to reporters at his Banani political office yesterday. Party secretary general ABM Ruhul Amin Hawlader, state minister for labour and employment Mujibul Haque Chunnu, presidium member SM Faisal Chisty, LGRD state minister Moshiur Rahman Ranga, Shafiqul Islam Sentu, Rezaul Islam Bhuiyan, vice-chairman Fakhruzzaman Jahangir were present at the briefing. When asked about joining the Awami League-led Grand Alliance, Ershad, the special envoy to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, said: “We’ve not talked about this matter inside the party. If the BNP joins the election, we’ll go to the polls under Grand Alliance. We expect to get a good number of seats even if we contest the upcoming election under the AL-led alliance.” The JaPa chief said the party had sold about 2,500 nomination forms over the last four days. He termed it as a promising sign for the party. JaPa will get good results in the upcoming poll if all the leaders and activists of the party work together, he observed. Ershad said the names of all candidates for the 11th parliamentary poll will be finalised at the party’s parliamentary board meeting on November 17-18.
