A group of students under the banner of ‘Pragatishil Chhatra Jote’of Jahangirnagar University (JU) besieged VC office yesterday demanding cancellation of the development fees taken from the newly-admitted first-year students and the graduates enrolling for master's programmes.
Students of different departments took position in front of the VC office and locked the main entrance of the university. They, however, withdrew their agitation programme at 10.30 am following an assurance by the university authorities to meet their demands.
Quoting JU Vice Chancellor Professor Farzana Islam, Nazir Amin Chowdhury Joy, president of Bangladesh Students’ Union of JU unit, said, “We sat for talks with deans and chairmen of different departments to reach a solution in this regard, but yet to get any solution.”
JU VC Prof Farzana Islam said, “We sat for talks with the students to resolve the issue. It will take some time to reach a final decision in this regard.”
Earlier, the students submitted a memorandum to the VC at her office with a document containing 4,500 signatures from current students.
In the memorandum, they proposed that instead of taking Tk 7,000 as development fee from each student, the authorities give allocations from the money they collected as admission test registration fees.
