Man falls to death while trying to avoid arrest

UNB, Sylhet

A man died falling off a rooftop of a building while being chased by police at Mejortila in Shah Paran area of the city early yesterday. The deceased was identified as Mohammad Abdullah, 33, a listed criminal and accused in a drug-related case filed with Goainghat Police Station.

Akter Hossain, officer-in-charge of Shah Paran Police Station, said a team of police conducted a drive at the house of Abdullah to arrest him in the night.

Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, Abdullah jumped off the rooftop in a bid to avoid arrest and sustained severe injuries. Later, he was taken to Osmani Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries around 5 am, the OC added.

Train derailment disrupts communication

UNB, Dhaka

The rail communication of Dhaka with other parts of the country was disrupted for nearly five and half hours yesterday morning following the derailment of three bogies of a goods-laden train at Tejgaon Rail Station in the city.

Three bogies of a Chattogram-bound goods-laden train from Dhaka veered off the tracks around 6:30 am, halting train movement, said Yeasir Arafat, officer-in-charge of Kamalapur Rail Station.

However, the train services from Dhaka to other parts of the country and vice versa were kept normal using an alternative route, he added. On information, a relief train went to the spot and cleared the rail tracks around 12 pm to resume the service, said Yeasir Arafat.

College girl found hanging

UNB, Sylhet

Police recovered the hanging body of a college girl from her house at Dakkhinbhag village in Golapganj upazila early Tuesday. The deceased was identified as Rasheda Begum, 21, daughter of Nizamuddin of the village and a student of Dhakadakkin High School and College in the upazila.

Locals said Rasheda went to her bed as usual after having dinner on Monday night. She committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan sometime at night.

Family members stormed the room on Tuesday morning breaking open the door after receiving no response from her despite repeated calls, they added. On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for autopsy, said Tapan Kanti Das, sub-inspector of Golapganj Model Police Station.

7 arrested over cop murder

BSS, Dhaka

Police unearthed the mystery behind the killing of Mizanur Rahman with capturing seven persons for their suspected link to the heinous act from Dhaka, Narsingdi and Pabna district.  “We, in separate raids at Dhaka, Narsingdi and Pabna districts at different times in the last couple of days, arrested seven people for their involvement in killing Mizanur Rahman,” a police official said.

The arrestees, Md Samsuddin alias Suruj, Md Hanif Bhuiyan, Rubel Mishu alias Mishu, Md Sumon Mia, Yakub Ali alias Babu, Habib and Chhoto Rubel, gave  confessional statements under section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) before the court, he also said.

DMP files 3,499 cases for traffic rule violations

BSS, Dhaka

Traffic division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in their simultaneous drives on the city streets on Monday filed 3,551 cases against different modes of vehicles for traffic rule violation. It also realised over Taka 30.67 lakh as fine for traffic rule violation, said an official release.

Of the total cases, 273 cases were lodged for driving on wrong sides, 63 for using hydraulic horn, three for using hooter and beckon light and 12 others for using tinted glass. Police filed 1,086 cases against motorcycles and seized 79 others for violation of the traffic rules.

Navy chief off to India

BSS, Dhaka

The chief of Navy Staff Admiral Nizamuddin Ahmed left Dhaka for India on Monday to attend a seminar marking the 10th anniversary of ‘Indian Ocean Naval Symposium’ (IONS).  Members of the IONS are participating in the two-day event that kicked off on November 13 at Kochi in India, an ISPR press release said.

The seminar will further strengthen mutual support and maritime cooperation among the countries of the Indian Ocean region.

Besides, this seminar will play an important role for the member states in achieving economic prosperity utilising the Blue-Economy concept. During his visit to India, Naval Chief will make a courtesy call on the Indian Navy Chief and exchange views with the naval high officials of the other member states of the IONS. The Navy Chief is expected to return home today.
 

Army chief calls on UAE chief of armed forces

BSS, Dhaka

Chief of Army Staff General Aziz Ahmed on Tuesday paid a courtesy call on the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) Chief of Staff of Armed Forces Lt Gen Hamad Mohammed Thani Al Rumaithi in UAE.

During the meeting, they exchanged greetings and discussed about the existing friendly relations between the two countries’ army personnel, said an ISPR press release here. Besides, General Aziz Ahmed visited Al-Hamra Combat Training Centre.
