Dhaka Test tit-bit

Sports Reporter, Dhaka

Mahmudullah’s hundred after long gap

Mahmudullah Riyad slammed his second Test century after an eight-year-long hiatus against Zimbabwe in Mirpur yesterday. Mahmudullah got his maiden Test century in his fifth Test against New Zealand in Hamilton in 2010 though he had opportunity to make his maiden hundred against India in the fourth Test in Dhaka before the New Zealand tour but he had no batsman to support him because wickets were falling at other end. As a result, he left the field with an unbeaten  96.

The spin all-rounder got the second ton after playing his 68 innings. He reached three-figure mark pushing Brandon Mavuta at cover for double. His classy101 off 122-ball-knock littered with four boundaries and two sixes. Just after his completing his brilliant century knock, Bangladesh declared their second innings at 224-6 following a comprehensive first innings declared 522-7 that gave them 443-run lead.

Mithun’s maiden fifty

Even though Mohammad Mithun was dismissed for nought in the first innings of his Test debut, he amended his mistake in the second innings by smashing his maiden Test fifty. The middle-order batsman completed his half-century by driving Brandon Mavuta to wide long-on for a single. Before being caught behind by Regis Chakabva off Sikandar Raza, Mithun struck 67 off 110 with four boundaries and a six.

Riyad-Mithun 100-run partnership

After losing five wickets for 25, Mahmudullah Riyad-Mohammad Mithun made a gritty resistance against Zimbabwean bowlers and shared an invaluable 118-run partnership for the fifth-wicket, where Mithun contributed 87-ball 59 beside Mahmudullah’s 53 from 76 balls.

Top-order’s discrepancy continued

Bangladesh top-order batsmen once again failed to sparkle in Dhaka after Sylhet Test. In the first innings of Dhaka Test, three top-order batsmen walked off the field for 26 runs, while four top-order batsmen in second innings fell for 25 runs.

Before Dhaka Test, Bangladesh missed to cross 200 runs in their last eight innings. In this case, the responsibility of the top-order was more than other batsmen. They had lacks in shot selection, feeble footwork, tendency to play unnecessary shot and excessive same shot (paddle and sweep shots) whatever the conditions are.

Miraj’s outstanding side-hero role

Mehidy Hasan Miraj was outstanding with both bat and ball in Dhaka Test. Actually Miraj played side-hero role what was needed to build up a massive total. He provided an adequate support to Mushfiqur Rahim to make his Test best 68 in First innings. Wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiq lauded Miraj’s role behind in record-setting double-hundred.  The 21-year-old all-rounder grabbed three wickets beside Taijul Islam’s three back-to-back five-for.

In second Innings, he gave ably support to Mahmudullah Riyad to clout his second century what he did after eight years. He was on 27 not out beside claiming one wicket among two fallen wickets.
