Poll participation lies on EC behaviour: Oikyafront

Staff Reporter, Dhaka

Jatiya Oikyafront’s participation in the forthcoming polls will depend on the behaviour of the poll-time government and the Election Commission (EC), alliance spokesperson and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said yesterday.

Fakhrul also said the clash between the police and BNP activists in front of the party office during the collection of nomination forms was ‘not at all a good omen’. He further said that the EC has expressed regret over the incident. Fakrul told this to journalists after coming out of a two-hour-long meeting between Oikyafront leaders and the EC led by chief election commissioner KM Nurul Huda at Election Bhaban in Dhaka.

The Oikyafront delegation led by Kamal Hossain included Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Moudud Ahmed, Mahmudur Rahman Manna and Krishak Sramik Janata League president Kader Siddique, among others.

Talking to reporters, Fakhrul said they polls… The polls environment should have to be congenial,” he said, speaking at a meeting with assistant returning officers (AROs) at the Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital’s Agargaon area.

Urging the AROs to discharge their duties with utmost sincerity and obey the laws, the CEC said, “You should remain alert so that no candidate is deprived of relevant facilities and ensure a credible election by keeping good relations with all candidates and local representatives.”

“You need to communicate with the members of the law enforcement agencies and you may seek help from them at any untoward situation,” Huda told the AROs. Assistant returning officers from Dhaka and Mymensingh divisions took part in the meeting.

Huda urged the AROs to coordinate with all upazila polling officers and officers-in-charge (OCs) of all police stations to hold a peaceful election. He also told the AROs to cooperate the media personnel within the limit of the law.

“It is your duty to ensure a level-playing field at the grass roots,” he said, adding: “Carry out your duties with professionalism. Ensure full compliance of electoral code.”

The 11th parliamentary election will be held on December 30. The authorities have fixed November 28 as the deadline for filing nomination papers, December 2 for scrutiny and December 9 last date of withdrawal.
