Business Initiative Leading Development (BUILD), a business think tank, yesterday underscored the need for taking necessary measures to increase the export of finished and crust leather.
Business Initiative Leading Development came up with the suggestion at its ‘6th Trade and Investment Working Committee Meeting’ held at the Commerce Ministry in the capital, a press statement said.
Senior Secretary of the Commerce Ministry Shubhasish Bose chaired the meeting while Business Initiative Leading Development Chief Executive Officer Ferdaus Ara Begum presented three papers.
Replying to a question about the fully operation of the Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) in Tannery Industry Estate of Dhaka (TIED), Shubhasish Bose said a high level committee should be formed immediately to monitor the Common Effluent Treatment Plant operation.
He stressed export diversification,
saying that both leather and leather goods and light engineering have a tremendous potential to grow, but policies need to be supportive.
Ferdaus Ara Begum recommended forming a high powered committee of relevant stakeholders for understanding and addressing the constraints against the Tannery Industry Estate of Dhaka operation in Savar.
She put emphasis on conducting an independent third party audit for monitoring current operation of Common Effluent Treatment Plant.
