The High Court (HC) yesterday rejected an appeal filed by BNP leader and former Housing and Public Works Minister Mirza Abbas seeking cancellation of a corruption case filed against him by the Anti-Corruption Commission for amassing wealth beyond known sources of income. There is no legal bar for the lower court concerned to continue the trial proceedings of the corruption case against BNP leader Mirza Abbas following the HC order, said ACC lawyer Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan.
After hearing on a petition filed Mirza Abbas, the HC bench Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice KM Hafizul Alam passed the rejection order yesterday. On August 16, 2007, the ACC filed the case with Ramna police station against Mirza Abbas and his wife Afroza Abbas. Following the case statement, the couple amassed wealth worth over Tk 5.97 crore beyond known sources of income. Besides, the ACC also found assets worth around Tk 33 lakh that were not mentioned in the wealth statements of the two submitted to the ACC, the case statement reads.
The trial court is recording statement from the witnesses of the case. Abbas filed a petition with the HC on October 4 this year for scrapping the trial proceedings of the case. Advocate AJ Mohammad Ali appeared for Mirza Abbas while Md Khurshid Alam stood for ACC and deputy attorney general AKN Amin Uddin Manik for the state.
