Juba League leader held over teen deaths

Staff Reporter, Dhaka

A Dhaka court yesterday granted bail to a Juba League leader who was arrested in connection with the death of two teenagers. The deceased—Mohammad Sujon (17) and Arif Hossain (14)—were run over by a carrier van during a clash between supporters of two Awami League (AL) leaders in the city’s Mohammadpur area on Saturday.

Mohammadpur police station officer-in-charge (OC) Jamal Uddin Mir said that Arifur Rahman Tuhin, convener of Juba League’s Adabar thana unit, was arrested on Saturday night. Tuhin was produced in court and police sought a five-day remand. But the court rejected the plea and granted bail to the accused.

Earlier, Faruk Hossain, the father of deceased Arif, had filed a case with Mohammadpur police station under Section 304 (causing death due to reckless driving). The case accused 20-25 unnamed individuals.

“Police are working to arrest all those involved in the incident,” the OC said.

Sources said Tuhin is a supporter of AL joint general secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak, who plans to contest the next poll from the Dhaka–13 constituency. On the other hand, the deceased were supporters of Sadek Khan, the general secretary of AL’s Dhaka City North unit, who is a rival party aspirant for the same seat.

On his part, Sadek said he was not aware as to who were behind the incident. He, however, claimed that two of his active supporters were killed and alleged that Tuhin was involved.

Police said trouble started after supporters of the rival poll aspirants brought out processions to pick up nomination papers on Saturday morning. The two groups clashed in front of Nobodoy Housing Ltd at Mohammadpur. Sujon and Arif were run over by a van during the clash.

The rival supporters also clashed on Road 10 and Road 16 at Adabar and the north Sunibir Housing and Shampa Market areas. At least 20 AL activists were injured in the clashes.

At a press briefing at the AL chief’s Dhanmondi office on Saturday, party general secretary Obaidul Quader informed that the Prime Minister has directed the authorities concerned to find out the reason behind this within two days.
