A weeklong Income Tax Fair, 2018, will kick off in Dhaka and other divisional headquarters across the country from tomorrow (Tuesday).
Being held for the ninth consecutive year, the aim of the fair is to provide better services to taxpayers and include more taxpayers in the tax net.
“The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has emphasised the submission of income tax returns as the prime source of revenue generation. That’s why we have a plan to bring 50 lakh people under the tax net in the country by 2021,” said NBR chairman Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan at a press meet titled ‘Income tax fair 2018’, held at the NBR headquarters yesterday (Sunday) in the capital.
“The number of electronic tax identification number (e-TIN) holders exceeds 30 lakh in the country at this moment. The total number of tax return submissions has also exceeded 20 lakh. We are expecting return submissions to rise to around 35 lakh with 2021,” said NBR chairman.
“Collecting tax in a harsh manner is not effective. We have to collect revenue in such a way that economic activities, investment and livelihood do not get affected,” he said.
When journalists asked about the budget of this fair, he replied that it was Tk. 22 crore. According to the NBR, the divisional headquarters will hold the fair for seven days, four days in 56 districts, two days in 32 upazilas and one day in 70 upazilas.
November 30 is the last day for the submission of income tax returns for individual taxpayers.
The fair will be held at the Officers' Club in Dhaka. During the past two years, the fair was held at the NBR's own office in the city’s Agargaon area.
To preclude traffic snarls on account of the ongoing construction of the Metro Rail, the NBR said it has shifted the fair venue from Agargaon to Officers' Club.
The new inclusion in the fair is tax training through audio-visual means, said the coordinator of the Fair and NBR member (income tax administration), Ziauddin Mahmud.
“New taxpayers can collect e-TINs (electronic tax identification numbers) at the fair while other taxpayers also can collect e-TIN through re-registration,” he said.
Ziauddin also said separate booths will be set up at the fair venues for e-payment and freedom fighters, women, people with disabilities and elderly taxpayers. Taxpayers will be able to file tax returns and perform other tax-related tasks at the fair.
On November 12, the NBR will distribute awards among the highest and longest taxpayers at the district level.
