Throat-slit body recovered

A college girl was found with her throat slit at her house at Charpara village in Ukhia Upazila on Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Sharmina Akhter, 17, daughter of Abu Taher of the village and Class-XI student of Ukhia Bangamata Fazilatunnesa Mujib Mahila College.
Locals claimed Sharmina returned home from her college around 1:30pm when her parents were out of home.
Later, victim’s mother Jahanara Begum found Sharmina’s body lying on the floor slaughtered around 2:30pm.
Officer-in-Charge of Ukhia Police Station Abul Khaer said police are investigating the killing.
Ethnic woman gang-raped
UNB, Sherpur
A woman of the Garo community was reportedly gang-raped by two young men at Kharamora village in Sribardi Upazila.
Police arrested one of the accused Arfan Ali, 35, son of Mafizul Haque of Balijuri village in the same upazila.
Victim’s family member claimed Arfan Ali and his accomplice entered the woman’s house introducing themselves as law enforcers and soon tied up the woman with a piece of cloth and violated her there by turn.
Hearing the screams of the victim, next-door neighbours rushed in and managed to nab Arfan and later handed him over to police while the other accused fled the scene.
Officer-in-Charge of Sribardi Police Station Mohammad Ruhul Amin Talukdar said police produced Arfan before the court seeking three-day remand after the victim filed a case accusing two including Arfan.
The victim was sent to the hospital for medical check-ups, the OC added.
2 minors drown in Sirajganj
UNB, Sirajganj
Two minor boys drowned while bathing in a pond at Rooppur village in Shahjadpur municipality area on Saturday evening.
The deceased were identified as Mithun Akanda, 6, son of Mano Akanda of the village and Imran, 8, son of Hanif, hailing from Dariapur village.
Officer-in-Charge of Shahjadpur Police Station Khaja Golam Kibria said Mithun and Imran went to take their baths at the pond at noon.
Later, family members found the bodies floating on the water body at noon, the OC added.
4.12 lakh tonnes of wheat to be produced in Rangpur division
BSS, Rangpur
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has fixed a target for farmers to produce 4.12-lakh tonnes of wheat from 1.25-lakh hectares in Rangpur division during this Rabi season.
The DAE officials said 78,478 tonnes of wheat will be produced from 23,760 hectares in five districts of Rangpur agriculture region and 3.34-lakh tonnes of wheat from 1.01-lakh hectares of land in three districts of Dinajpur agriculture region.
Meanwhile, the farmers of all eight districts in the division have started preparing crop lands for sowing wheat seed after harvesting early varieties of Transplanted Aman (T-Aman) rice varieties. The government is distributing 670 tonnes of wheat seed, 670 tonnes of Di-ammonium Phosphate (DAP) and 335 tonnes of Muriate of Potash (MoP) fertilisers among 33,500 farmers under agriculture incentives programme to promote wheat farming in the region.
“Under the programme, each of the beneficiary farmers is getting 20-kg wheat seed, 20-kg DAP and 10-kg MoP fertilisers free of costs for cultivating wheat on one bigha of land,” said horticulture specialist of DAE Khondker Md Mesbahul Islam.
