Youngster leg-spinner Brandon Mavuta and Peter Moor injected the effervescence into Zimbabwe to fight against the spirited Bangladesh that ultimately made the difference and won in the record-breaking bid at Tigers’ home turf.
Peter Moor shone in with bat in Zimbabwe’s first innings, whilst Brandon Mavuta sparkled with ball in their second innings. Moor fought to the end with his fellow batsmen to muster a good total for Zimbabwe and Mavuta attempted his best in his turn to defend Tigers’ batters.
En route to his indefatigable 63, Peter Moor stitched together a couple of successful partnerships including 72-run fifth-wicket with Sean Williams and 60-run sixth-wicket with wicketkeeper-batsman Regis Chakabva that actually laid the advantage for them. Debutant Brandon Mavuta, therefore, finished for Zimbabwe with his best bowling figures of 4-21 removing Mushfiqur Rahim, Mehidy Hasan Miraj, Nazmul Hossain Shanto and Nazmul Islam Opu.
Mavuta is happy to get four-for on his Test debut as he said that he tries to bowl keeping his process right against Bangladesh batsmen, who are good at handling the spinners.
“Yeah, confident builds every time I get into the park. Since it was my first, getting four wickets in the second innings,” said Brandon Mavuta, who follows Shane Warne and Adil Rashid.
“Obviously, it is a massive boost of confidence to me. So, pretty happy I did well in the second innings,” Mavuta told media after their first practice session at the BCB-National Cricket Academy (NCA) ground yesterday.
The 21-year-old Zimbabwean leg-spinner said that he as a spinner always tries to fumble the batsmen with his variation.
“As a spinner, that's one of your strength. You need to be able to change your pace, try to work out what the batsman is trying to do. That something came out on that day. I am quite happy to do that things properly,” he cited.
Batsman Peter Moor also lauded Mavuta’s bowling performance in the first Test, stating that if they could nurture him well he would be a good prospect for them.
“He is obviously a young guy and got so much talent. He is got a very bright future. I think if Zimbabwe look after him and he continues to grow as a player, it’s gonna be fantastic for our future,” Peter Moor said of Brandon Mavuta.
Later Moor said that their team is in good stead after winning the first Test in resounding way but the next will not be easy duckling.
“Team is in a good place, I think. We know this is also gonna be very challenging. Obviously, it’s a different wicket. Little bit more unpredictable wicket, I think," he said.
