Dhaka Division vanquished Dhaka Metropolis on the third day with an innings and 161 runs in the fifth round of the Tier-2 fixture in the National Cricket League (NCL) at the Shaheed Chandu Stadium in Bogura yesterday.
At Rangpur Cricket Garden, Rangpur Division took a 108-run lead against Rajshahi Division before the bails were drawn for the final day.
Dhaka vs Metro
Dhaka Metropolis fell into the spin barrage of Dhaka Division to resume their second innings on day third on 59 for two after their bizarre first innings declaration for 59 for eight.
Young opener Shadman Islam Anik made a good start with Mohammad Ashraful as the duo shared 63 runs for the third wicket stand but Shuvagata Hom Chowdhury broke the partnership. Shadman converted his overnight 26 to fifty-plus score. He clobbered seven boundaries to make 66 off 136 having caught out.
This time Mohammad Ashraful attempted to make a gritty resistance and build up big partnership but Mosharraf Hossain Rubel and Taibur Rahman Parvez jolted Metro’s middle-order with their spin magic that dented Metro’s hopes to take a lead. Rubel dislodged Mohammad Ashraful and captain Marshall Ayub in his successive two overs and Parvez removed Shykat Ali for zero while Dhaka Metropolis were tattering at 143. Ashraful among them made double-digit score as he slammed 72-ball 34 with five fours and a six before being bowled.
It’s Taibur Rahman Parvez who was the wrecker-in-chief, ensured their comprehensive second victory removing the last batsman Asif Hossain Ratul for four-ball duck. Parvez finished with his bowling figures of 4-31.
He was ably supported by Mosharraf Hossain Rubel and Shuvagata Hom Chowdhury. The pair grabbed five wickets, three of which was claimed by Rubel and two by Hom.
Rangpur vs Rajshahi
National discarded fast-bowler Subashis Roy along with newbie Robiul Haque damaged the havoc much of Rajshahi Division, who added 184 runs to resume the third day on 64 for two.
Subashis and Robiul evenly shared eight spoils between them. The national discard leaked 74 runs to pick up his stakes. The newbie gave away 62 runs to snap up his scalps.
One-down batsman Zunaid Siddique added 13 runs with his overnight 35 before being bowled by Subashis Roy.
Together with captain Jahurul Islam, Farhad Hossain tried to make a big partnership and hit 90 runs.
With the dismissal of this well-set partnership, Rajshahi witnessed a mini-collapse as they lost four wickets in the space of seven runs. Subashis and Robiul jointly made the collapse. Of them, Sabbir Rahman Rumman and Muktar Ali fell for nought.
Though Zunaid missed his half-century, his overnight partner Farhad Hossain brought up his half-century. He clattered eight boundaries to strike his patient 201-ball 71. And Jahurul holed out for 33.
Rajshahi finally managed to put on 248 on board by late fire of Sunzamul Islam (25), Forhad Reza (18), Delwar Hossain (12) and Shafiqul Islam (not out 13).
In second innings, Rangpur Division scored 20 for one that gave them an opportunity to stretch the lead from 108 to further with nine wickets in hand and a day left to play.
The other two games of Barishal Division vs Khulna Division at Barishal Divisional Stadium and Chattogram Division vs Sylhet Division at Sheikh Kamal International Cricket Stadium (SKICS) Academy Ground in Cox’s Bazar are yet to start due to the inclement weather.
