AL leader arrested with yaba

UNB, Cox’s Bazar

Police arrested a female Awami League (AL) leader reportedly along with 1,925 Yaba pills from Cox’s Bazar Airport on Tuesday afternoon.

The arrestee was identified as Khurshida Karim, former women affairs secretary of Ukhia upazila AL and former member of Haldiapalong union parishad. She also contested the upazila parishad election for vice-chairman post from the ruling party.

Farid Uddin Khandakar, officer-in-charge of Cox’s Model Police Station, said the Yaba pills were found at the vanity bag of Khurshida around 4:15pm while he was entering the airport for going to Dhaka.

Woman ‘gang-raped’ in Jashore

A case was filed against three people on Tuesday for allegedly gang-raping a housewife in Manirampur upazila.

Shahidul Islam, officer-in-charge of Manirampur Police Station, said the victim filed the case with his police station in the afternoon.

The accused were identified as Nazim Uddin of Hogladanga village, and Golam Mostafa and Rezaul Islam of Kazirgaon village in the upazila. According to the case statement, the accused swooped on the house of the victim, aged about 33, at Hogladanga village in absence of her husband on October 24 and violated her in turns.

The accused also threatened the victim with dire consequences if she disclosed the incident.

Trader hacked dead in Bogura

A meat trader was hacked to death allegedly by his fellow at Gangnagar Majhpara village in Shibganj upazila on Tuesday morning over dues.

The deceased was identified as Saljar Rahman, 60, son of late Baji Mollah of the village.

Witnesses said Saljar locked into an altercation with his co-trader Adil while the former went to the latter’s house at the same village seeking his dues.

At one stage of their altercation, Adil chopped Saljar in the throat and head indiscriminately with a sharp weapon, leaving him dead on the spot.

Later, locals caught Adil and handed him over to police after giving him a good beating, said Mizanur Rahman, in-charge of Mokamtala Police Investigation Centre.

Six jailed for taking hemp

A mobile court on Tuesday sentenced six persons to a three-month simple imprisonment each for taking hemp.

Court sources said the mobile court led by Executive Magistrate Md Asaduzzaman awarded the punishment after examining relevant evidences.

Earlier, the court comprising members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) conducted a raid in Palpara area of the town and held the six on charges of taking hemp.
