Call to rehabilitate victims of human trafficking

RAJSHAHI: Speakers at a programme unequivocally called for a holistic approach involving government and non-government organisations to rehabilitate human trafficking victims, reports BSS. They came up with the call at a review meeting on district level directory at Food Palace Hall Room in Naogaon town.

Sachetan Rajshahi, a rights organisation, arranged the meeting in association with Bangladesh Counter Trafficking in Persons Programme. USAID and Winrock International jointly supported the meeting. Deputy Commissioner Mijanur Rahman addressed the meeting as the chief guest while Senior Assistant Judge Tajul Islam, Deputy Director of Department of Social Services Sebanur Rahman, Deputy Director of Department of Youth Development Addul Mannan, Deputy Director of Bangladesh Rural Development Board Mijanur Rahman and Deputy Director of Department of Family Planning Dr Kustary Amina Queen spoke as special guests.

During his concept paper presentation, Mahmud-Un-Nabi, Project Coordinator of Sachetan Rajshahi, illustrated the aspects of the district directory besides giving an overview of the project and it’s implementing strategy.

The speakers observed that the victims of human trafficking need integrated support to lessen their plights and vulnerabilities with proper rehabilitation in society.

DC Mijanur Rahman stressed the need for collective efforts of all government and non-government organisations concerned for proper rehabilitation of the human trafficking victims. He said the human trafficking victims are subjected to repression and oppression by their surrounding people and that is why there should be effective and time-befitting measures for ensuring their access to family and social integration.

He told the meeting that the district human trafficking survivor service directory’ has already been uploaded in district administration website that will act as a district level effective referral process relating to traffic victim services.

Taking part in group discussions, the participants put forward a set of recommendations on how to make the service-oriented activities appropriate to ease the plights of human trafficking victims.
