Senior journalist Humayun Zaman passed away yesterday at Shamorita Hospital in the capital where he had been diagnosed with lung cancer. He was 61. Humayun was serving as an associate editor of the New Age. A student of the Institute of Fine Arts under the University of Dhaka, Humayun started his career at vernacular daily Sangbad at the age of 22 and served many others dailies, including New Nation, The Independent, and now-defunct Bangladesh Times and Morning Sun. His younger brother Faruque Zaman said his janaja will be held at Green Corner Mosque at Green Road after Zohr prayers today. He will be buried at Mirpur Martyr Intellectuals’ Graveyard into his father’s grave, he said. Humayun was a bachelor and was the eldest among eight siblings. His father M Anisuzzaman was also a journalist who served as the managing director of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangshta, the state-owned news agency, between 1997 and 1998. His grandfather Moulana Ahmed Ali was also a journalist who became the editor of Kolkata-based Bangla daily the Nabayug in undivided India under the British rule.
