Fishermen fined for catching hilsa

Members of Coast Guard here yesterday arrested four fishermen for catching Hilsa in the river Meghna under Gazaria Upazila of the district defying the government ban, reports BSS from Munshiganj. Coast Guard sources said the fishermen were arrested along with 30 kg mother hilsa, 1,20,000 meter current nets and 30,000 meter kuna net during a drive in the river Meghna. The arrested fishermen are Md. Selim, Md. Sakawath Hossain, Md. Billal Hossain and Md. Ahmend Ali. The fishermen were produced before a mobile court. The court headed by Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mahbuba Bilkish fined them Taka 2,000 each. The seized nets were destroyed and the Hilsa fishes were distributed among the poor people. Coast Guard Station Commander of Pagla Sub-Lt. Hasanur Rahman and Gazaria Upazila Fishery Officer Salma Akter said the value of the seized fish, current and kona nets would be around Taka 6.15 lakh.
