Multi-storied building catches fire in Gulshan

Gulshan: A fire broke out in a multi-storied building at Gulshan-1 in the capital yesterday. Fire service control room sources said smokes started to came out from the 8th floor of 'Silver Tower' building around 2pm. On information, nine fire-fighting teams rushed in and doused the flame around 2:25 pm. However, no casualty was reported.

Ten jailed in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI: Several  mobile courts of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) sentenced 10 people to different jail terms on charge of taking and selling drugs.

On tips-off, the elite force conducted drives in different areas of Rajshahi and Natore districts on Tuesday and arrested the people for their alleged involvement in taking and selling drugs. RAB officials said they also seized 2,595 pieces of Yaba tablets, 285 bottles of Phensidyl, 105 grams of hemp, a private car and some other drugs- taking instruments from their possession.

Later, the arrested were produced before five separate mobile courts. After examining the evidences, the mobile courts sentenced 10 of them to various jail terms.

20 shops gutted at Rangpur

RANGPUR: Some 20 business shops were gutted by a devastating fire at Rangpur New Market in the city on Tuesday night, police and fire service personnel said.

Assistant Deputy Director of Rangpur Fire Service and Civil Defense Station Shamsuzzoha said the fire erupted from an electric short circuit in a shop and engulfed the adjoining shops gutting huge properties.

“Being informed, ten units of Fire Service and Civil Defense from four stations and police rushed to the spot and distinguished the fire in one hour,” he said.

Officer-in-Charge of Rangpur Kotwali Metropolitan Police Station Reazul Karim said the process of assessment of damages of properties already started.

JCI Bangladesh General Assembly held

Junior Chamber International (JCI) Bangladesh has elected their new board for the year 2019 in the general assembly held at a hotel in the capital on Saturday, said a press release.  

Irfan Islam was elected as National President for 2019, who is currently serving as Executive Vice President of JCI Bangladesh. Sarah Kamal was elected as National Executive Vice President for 2019. Along with them Arman Ahmed Khan, Salehin F Nahiyan and Ismat Jahan were elected as National Vice Presidents of JCI Bangladesh.

Besides, Erfan Haque was appointed as National Secretary General, Mir Shahed Ali as National General Legal Counsel and Sakib Ahmed as Treasurer for 2019. Abu Taleb Siddique was appointed as Chair, Bangladesh Development Council and Ziaul Haque as Chair, International Affairs.  Mentionable that, Junior Chamber International (JCI) is a worldwide organisation of young professionals and leaders between the ages of 18 and 40.

The organization is found in over 120 countries and has a membership of 200,000 across the world.

Mainstreaming of disabled population stressed

RANGPUR: Rights activists have said the present government puts maximum importance on mainstreaming of the disabled population to ensure their socio-political and human rights to attain sustainable development goals (SDGs).

They viewed this at inaugural function of the two-day district conference of representatives of the disabled peoples’ organisations (DPOs) held on Monday in the conference room of ASOD Training Centre in the city.

The National Council of Disabled Women with assistance of Action on Disability and Development (ADD) International Bangladesh organised the conference participated by representatives of all union and upazila level DPOs of the district.

Deputy Commissioner Enamul Habib attended the conference as the chief guest with country director of ADD International Bangladesh Shafikul Islam in the chair.
