Sunny sky greets the faithful on Eid

Special Correspondent

Despite a forecast, there was hardly any rainfall to dampen Eid-ul-Azha celebrations across the country. There were only a few scattered showers. South-western Satkhira received the highest, 4mm, followed by 3mm in south-eastern Chittagong and north-eastern Sylhet, and 1mm in the south-eastern hill town of Rangamati, said sources in the meteorological department yesterday. A bright autumn sun greeted the faithful who had gathered at the national prayer ground in Dhaka to offer their Eid prayers. Taking no risk, the Dhaka South City Corporation, however, had set up a waterproof canopy over the ground. Baitul Mukarram National Mosque, the other venue for prayers, had no such arrangement, however, and the sunny morning came as a relief to those who had gathered there for prayers. A weatherman at the Dhaka Meteorological Centre explained that with the monsoon gradually winding up its activities, there was no rain in the 24 hours preceding 6pm yesterday in any of the locations where the department has observatories. As a result, the temperature started going up. The highest day temperature recorded in the country yesterday was 35.4 degrees Celsius, followed by 34.6 in Rajshahi, 34.3 in Chittagong and 33.5 in Dhaka. There are, however, chances of light to moderate rainfall and thundershowers accompanied by gusts of wind at one or two places in Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions today. Other parts of the country may see a partly cloudy sky. Day and night temperatures are likely to remain largely unchanged across the country over the next 24 hours, but the rains may return in the next five days, the Met has forecast.
