According to the World Health Organization (WHO) health is "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease". Mental health, therefore, is an integral part of human health and wellbeing”. From time to time we all have to deal with emotional distress or major events in our lives, for the most part they are short lived and we can deal with them in our own time, but sometimes these events can trigger a host of unexpected feelings and behaviours from depression and panic attacks to anxiety etc. and disruption of sleep and eating habits.
According to WHO, more than 450 million peo ple in the world are suffering from neuro-psychiatric disorders and in Bangladesh there are 15 million people suffering from mental illnesses of various types. In other words, almost 10 percent of the population is in need of mental health Services.
Mental health disorders are medical conditions that interrupt a person’s thinking, feeling, mood, ability to relate to others, and daily functioning which result in a diminished capacity for coping with the ordinary demands of life.
The use of Acupuncture treatment for mental illness is growing in popularity due to its desirable efficacy and side effects of medications. It has already established its reputation in the developed countries to treat the problematic psychological and emotional mental conditions like stress, depression, anxiety, mood swings, behavioral problem, neurocognitive disorder, drug abuse, attention deficit, hyperactivity, insomnia, panic disorder, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder etc.
Acupuncture treatment not only look at alleviating the symptoms associated with mental health problems but can also treat the root of the problem by helping to re-balance the body’s internal environment. This method helps in experiencing deeper internal relaxation, stress reduction, and increased internal energy flow and balance. These characteristics make Acupuncture treatment excellent complements to psychotherapy, counseling, and psychiatric treatment. If you are not happy with the drugs or are experiencing unwanted side effects, acupuncture can help.
Research has demonstrated that acupuncture can influence the neuro-chemical pathways of the brain, in particular, the area involved in the mechanism. It indirectly stimulates the same neurotransmitters involved in problems and can be utilized at different stages of treatment. Acupuncture raises the level of endorphins in the nervous system, reducing cravings and withdrawal symptoms, and creates a sense calmness, which encourages physical, emotional and spiritual healing and others.
Acupuncture treatment involves tiny, disposable, sterile needles placed gently into specific points on the body to relieve dysfunction and restore health.
Acupuncture is an effective method of treatment, it has worked where nothing else has. The effectiveness of acupuncture is well-documented.
Throughout its long history, acupuncture has established a solid reputation as an excellent alternative for health care that actually works. This method of treatment is recognized and recommended by WHO and National Institutes of Health-USA as a scientific, drug less, free from side effect, complimentary, simple and very effective method for various diseases.
Though this treatment has already been started in our country but due to quite less number of medically educated qualified acupuncture doctors available here and lack of proper perception about the application of this method, the patients are depriving from the advantages of Acupuncture treatment.
An Acupuncture doctor should possess adequate knowledge and experience for providing proper treatment to his/her patients. Inadequate education, knowledge and experience may lead to serious medical problems.
This method of treatment is also exists in Dhaka at govt. hospital, only at “Govt, Unani-Ayurvedic Medical College & Hospital, with free of cost. This is an affiliated and constituent institute under the University of Dhaka. Here overseas educated Bangladeshi acupuncture specialist is providing free treatment service.
