Supporting children with ASD in special school

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder with lifelong impacts. There is no known cause for ASD, but it's prevalence rate is on the rise.  According   to current data  of  Institute of  Paediatric  Neurodisorder and Autism, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, the prevalence rate of autism in children between 16 and 30 months of age is 1.7 per 1000 in Bangladesh. Autism awareness is playing a vital role to increase support and acceptance towards the children with ASD. We should provide their primary needs and ensure proper guidance for them. If we delay the diagnosis then it may delay early intervention of the child. As a result we are missing out the important teaching time of the child with autism.

In addition, children with ASD lose the caring they need from the very beginning at their age. As human being, they have the basic right to receive an equal opportunity of receiving education.  It is essential to determine child's needs and to address them. Receiving inappropriate education can interrupt child’s possibility to lead an independent and fulfilling life as an adult.

What type of support need for the child with ASD:

Children with ASD need a diversified support in the perspective of education, training and nurture to ensure better physical growth and development and to adapt themselves in the culture and society so that they can expose themselves as a better self with dignity which will help them to the way of inclusion. We should have the responsibilities to provide them proper education, training and nurture.

Children with ASD broadly struggle with communication capacity, social situations adjustment, interpersonal skills, personal management, independent living skill, and other inappropriate behavioral challenges as a result children with ASD face difficulties to adapt themselves in any mainstream school setting. That’s why they need support in this regards.

School is that elementary place where children learn how to make friends, to handle difficult situations, to communicate with the members of society and to interact in different socio-emotional conditions. School setting creates the   teaching- learning environment fun, stimulating and dynamic and these things are needed for a child with autism. Moreover, children with ASD have additional mental health needs.

 Dealing with the children with autism is difficult. They faces difficulties to apply they learn in their real life situations. So they need proper guidelines, scope and acceptance to present themselves in practical life.

Safety and security is highly needed in all the settings they live.

Enjoyable leisure and cultural activities are needed for them which play an important role to develop themselves as a whole.

How special school supports the children with ASD:

Special school has an important role to deal with, manage, and support children with autism and their families with greater awareness and understanding and to ensure a quality education and have the opportunity to bring out their potential.

Special school has the special classroom settings, different types of suitable sensory tools, audio-visual tools, video presentation as alternative media, and accessibility according to their needs.

Special schools provide services like special education, psychological assistance, speech & language therapy, occupational therapy and physiotherapy related assistance, sensory needs, life skill assistance and other behavioral management to ensure a  healthy, safe and independent living for the children with ASD on the basis of their needs, problems,  strengths  and weakness.

When children with ASD attend in special school with proper safe and caring environment they learn differently and they can present themselves in the area of socialization, communication, cognitive abilities, important life skills and also livelihood skills.

Special school ensures structured lesson plans which make clear instructions for students as well as special educators what is to be done, when it needs to be done, when it is completed, and what comes next.

Special school develops individualized plan with specific, short-term and long-term goals which helps them increase functioning in daily life as independently as possible and way of learning.

Special school support the children with ASD using evidence based practices, applying standard teaching methods and techniques through furnished teachers and other related professionals.   

Special school plays a vital role in assessments, monitoring and evaluation process of the children with ASD.

Special school ensures the teaching-learning environment with multi-professionals involvements and also involves the active participation of the parents of the children with ASD.  

Special classrooms setting help to interact, socialize and communicate with others effectively and to remove the stress, anxiety and depression they have.

Special schools try to improve the socio-emotional competencies of children with this spectrum as socio-emotional learning has an important role to establish meaningful social relationship.

Special school explores the potentials of ASD children they have to search their excellence.

Special school provides a discipline life to integrate themselves in their communities to build meaningful relationships.

There is an important role of special schools to raising autism awareness with proactive approach.

How special educators provide structured and quality education:

Special educators enthusiastically follow some rules in their teaching practices as they have good sense of humor and affection to children with ASD which are given below.

Special educators are the trained professional and have a professional degree on special education which leads them to get insightful observation and understanding of the children with special need. As a result special educators have the determination and capacity to provide quality education.

Structured instruction is a unique requirement for the ASD children according to their need. Specific instruction helps to get individual attentions and responses. This phenomenon helps ASD children not only time to process information but also to reciprocate as well.

It is urgent to provide children with ASD a repeated trials and opportunities before they finally understand a concept. They also use proper teaching method and techniques. Special educator therefore works relentlessly until the child understands the concept and they are able to clearly develop their cognitive abilities.

Special educators have in-depth understanding of the psychological and behavioral patterns of ASD children and use unique aids and tools to teach them.

Special educator poses some ethical and moral qualities and they encourage children with ASD for proper behavior and guide them for the wrong ones with great tolerance and patience in their teaching process.

Special educators are directly involved in monitoring and evaluation process of the children with ASD.

People should not give any stigma towards the children or adults with special need rather we should give every opportunity so that they can make their place as a member of our culture and society. Special school supports the children with ASD in this regard.
