A low pressure area has formed over the North Andaman Sea and adjoining areas of the Bay of Bengal. It is likely to intensify further. Its associated trough extends to the northeast Bay. A trough of low now lies over the eastern part of Bangladesh and adjoining area, while a high pressure ridge persists over the northeast Bay, the Met Office said. Meteorologists said another low pressure area may form over the same area sometime between yesterday and today.
This may eventually help break the current spell of dry weather across the country since early last week. Sources said the low pressure area over the northern Andaman Sea could intensify into a depression and move away towards Thailand. But the second low pressure forming in the Bay later this month may bring the long-awaited rains, a senior meteorologist said. The formation of the low has put the mercury upwards yesterday.
Dhaka experienced a maximum of 33.2 degrees Celsius. The country's highest maximum temperature 34C was recorded in the south-western city of Khulna and nearby Satkhira yesterday.
No rain was recorded yesterday in the country till 6am. The weather forecast for today said that the weather may remain dry with a partly cloudy sky over the country. Besides, the day and night temperatures may remain nearly unchanged, it added.
