‘Drug trader’ hurt in ‘gunfight’
Joypurhat: A suspected drug trader sustained bullet injuries in a reported gunfight between two groups of drug traders at Tilakpur Burapukur in Akkelpur upazila early yesterday, reports UNB.
The injured was Ohidul, son of Kachim Uddin of Roynagar village in the upazila and accused in seven drug-related cases. Hearing gunshots, a patrol team of police went to the spot, said Kiran Kumar Roy, officer-in-charge of Akkelpur Police Station.
Sensing the presence of police, the drug traders fled away. Later, police found Ohidul as bullet-hit condition and took him to Joypurhat Modern Hospital.
The police team also recovered a pistol, one round bullet and 47 bottles of Phensidyl from the spot.
Documentary on PM’s 10 special initiatives screened
GAIBANDHA: Documentary films on Prime Minister’s 10 special initiatives and Padma Bridge were screened on Bhangamore High School ground of Shaghata upazila here yesterday, reports BSS.
Mass communication department of Information Ministry screened the film under the project entitled ‘Publicity Activity Strengthening in Rural Community Development’ in the caption of Ageye Jachchhe Bangladesh in cooperation with district administration and ansar and VDP department.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Sebastin Rema inaugurated the film display function as the chief guest and district commandant of ansar and VDP Aftekharul Islam was present as the special guest.
With head teacher of the school Shah Alam Sarker in the chair, the function was also addressed, among others, by district correspondent of BSS Sarker M. Shahiduzzaman, district correspondent of BTV Abedur Rahman Swapon and district correspondent of Bangladesh Betar Gobinda Lal Das.
DC Sebastin Rema said Bangladesh is marching towards uplift and has already become a role model of development in the world under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Bangladesh has graduated from LDC by implementing huge development activities during last ten years and the country would be turned into a middle income one by 2021 and developed one by 2041, the DC added.
The DC urged the viewers to propagate the success of development activities achieved by the government to the doors of the people. He thanked the mass communication department for arranging such the programme aimed at informing the grass root people about the achievement and success of the government.
Later, the documentary films on PM’s 10 special initiatives- Ektee Bari Ektee Khamar, Ashrayan Project, Digital Bangladesh, Education assistance programme, Women empowerment, Electricity to all houses, Community clinics and mental health, Social safety net programme, Investment situation and Environment well-protection were screened. Besides, a film on under construction Padma Bridge and film on awareness creating about drug, militancy and early marriage were screened.
District information officer Toufiqul Islam said the film display programmes were held at 156 spots in 78 unions here on Saturday and Wednesday.
Minor girl drowns falling off bamboo bridge in Chandpur

A school girl drowned in a canal after falling from a bamboo bridge at Moishadi village in sadar upazila on Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Aklima Akter, 6, daughter of Ziauddin Miji and a class one student of Mirzapur Government Primary School.
Locals say Aklima slipped and fell into the canal unnoticed while crossing the bridge to go to a shop to buy biscuits.
Later, they spotted the floating body and took her to Chandpur General Hospital where duty doctor Dr Asibul Hasan declared her dead.
Month-long rat killing drive begins
Manikganj: As part of country wide programme a month long rat killing drive was inaugurated here yesterday, reports BSS.
On this occasion, a discussion was held at the auditorium of Manikganj district council.
With Md Habibur Rahman Chowdhury, Deputy Director, Department of Agriculture Extension in the chair, S M Ferdous, deputy commissioner, Manikganj was present at the function as the chief guest.
